For this week’s blog, we have something a little different. I sat down with North Shropshire’s local audiologist, Laura Stone. We talked about her journey working as an audiologist, to opening Cambrian hearing and what she loves most about Shropshire. If you’d like to get to know the person who’ll be removing your earwax and fitting your hearing aids, read on…

A Local Hearing Care Professional

Laura is truly a local audiologist. She was born in Edgton, South Shropshire – not far from Church Stretton and the Long Mynd. After leaving Shropshire to live in Wales for a time, she returned to live in other areas of Shropshire, including Shrewsbury and Oswestry, where she has been since 2010. Laura says that what she loves most about Shropshire is the peace and the calmness. It has a nice pace of life when compared to a city.

From Teacher to Audiologist

Whilst she initially trained as a primary school teacher, Laura fancied a change of career. Her father was working in Specsavers at the time, and mentioned they were looking for trainee audiologists. Curious to see how she would fair, Laura took up the role and came to feel very passionately about the profession and how she could help people. She says that she loved (and still loves) seeing the difference a hearing aid can make to a person’s life and to their loved ones. She saw the difference a hearing aid made to her grandmother, being able to communicate more easily, near the end of her life.

A Qualified Audiologist

Encouraged by her experience as a trainee audiologist at Specsavers, Laura studied at Anglia Ruskin, where she obtained a distinction in Audiology. The course was very hands on, and had Laura practicing hearing care in clinics all over North Shropshire and North Wales, so she really knows the local community.

An Experienced Audiologist

Laura has provided hearing care services with clinics all over Shropshire, Cheshire and North Wales. She has worked in big name hearing care providers like Specsavers as well as smaller, independent audiologists. She spent 2023 doing hearing care home visits and then set up shop in February 2024 on Old Chapel Court, Oswestry, with Cambrian Hearing.

The Future of Cambrian Hearing

Cambrian Hearing is relatively new to North Shropshire, but Laura knows the community. She says that she hopes to become the number one name in North Shropshire for earwax removal, hearing care and hearing aids. With her level of experience and her continuous learning, she can provide an incredibly high level of care for an independent audiologist at competitive prices.

Looking further to the future, Laura hopes to expand her reputation into North Wales, providing hearing care to places like Llangollen and, eventually, even train more hearing care professionals.

Laura is quickly becoming a trusted name in the Oswestry community. Looking at her experience, qualifications and passion, it is easy to see why. If you need your ears looked at by a friendly, local audiologist, come to Cambrian Hearing and meet Laura.
